Explanation: as...as comparisons

Use as...as when two things are equal or similar. Use not as...as when two things are different.

1. As + adjective + as

Use this structure to say that two people, places or things are equal in one way.

Structure:
subject + verb + as + adjective + as + second thing

Sentence	Meaning
My phone is as new as your phone.	The two phones are equally new.
This room is as big as that room.	The two rooms are the same size.
English is as important as maths.	English and maths are equally important.

2. Not as + adjective + as

Use not as + adjective + as to say that two things are not equal.

Examples:
This bag is not as heavy as that bag.
The bus is not as fast as the train.
My room is not as tidy as my sister’s room.

3. As many + plural countable noun + as

Use as many ... as with plural countable nouns: books, chairs, students, emails, apples.

Structure:
subject + verb + as many + plural noun + as + second person/thing

Sentence	Meaning
I have as many books as you.	We have the same number of books.
There are as many chairs as students.	The number of chairs and students is the same.
She sends as many emails as her manager.	They send the same number of emails.

4. As much + uncountable noun + as

Use as much ... as with uncountable nouns: water, money, time, rice, homework, information.

Structure:
subject + verb + as much + uncountable noun + as + second person/thing

Sentence	Meaning
I drink as much water as my brother.	We drink the same quantity of water.
She has as much homework as me.	We have the same quantity of homework.
This course gives as much information as the other course.	The quantity of information is the same.

5. Negative forms

Form	Example
not as + adjective + as	This laptop is not as fast as that laptop.
not as many + plural noun + as	I don’t have as many pens as you.
not as much + uncountable noun + as	We don’t have as much time as them.

Remember:
Use as + adjective + as for adjectives: as tall as, as expensive as.
Use as many + plural noun + as for countable nouns: as many books as.
Use as much + uncountable noun + as for uncountable nouns: as much money as.
